Operations of the Cairo underground metro's first line have been restored after a brief disruption on Sunday morning owing to a sudden failure in the electricity network at one of its stations, a statement by the metro's operator said.

The first line's train traffic was halted for hours on Sunday morning as the electricity network at the Sayeda Zeinab station went off for nearly five hours, as per media reports.

According to the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation, many vacant carriages were dispatched to accommodate the crowding caused by the disruption, which led to a delay in train arrivals.

Movement of Cairo's first and second lines' trains is working normally at full capacity, according to the statement.

More than two million commuters use the Cairo underground metro every day.
