Cairo governorate started on Thursday the operation of new automated garbage trucks in an experimental phase in southern Cairo, replacing traditional manual collection methods.

The new trucks have started operations from the corniche road at El-Sayeda Zeinab district to the North Tora Axis, and along Salah Salem Boulevard in the Old Cairo district, said Gehan Abdel-Moneim, deputy governor of Cairo's southern region.

The trucks are fitted with equipment for automatic sweeping of streets and suctioning waste.

Cairo, which has a population of over 10 million residents, relies in garbage collection and recycling on a system that combines traditional garbage collectors and a modern network of sanitation companies that use garbage trucks.

The switch to automated garbage trucks, which is part of the capital's new sanitation system, will start officially in July.

The deputy governor noted that all drivers have been trained in operating the new equipment and the maintenance procedures to maximise efficiency.
