The police, river rescue forces, and seven ambulances from Damietta and Daqahliya were dispatched to the site of the accident.
The bus was carrying children returning from a Quran competition in Damietta governorate, according to eyewitnesses.
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayyeb has expressed mourning for the victims, and ordered to quickly disburse compensation to the families of the deceased and the injured, according to Al-Azhar Facebook page.
Egypt has witnessed a steady decline in the number of road accidents in recent years in parallel with national efforts to improve the countrywide road network.
The country reported a drop of 28.9 percent in road traffic injuries and 8.9 percent in deaths in 2020 compared to the previous year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said in a report in November.
The number of road traffic injuries and deaths were 56,789 and 6,164, respectively, in 2020, according to the report.
