Boy killed, 6 injured in traffic accident in Luxor

A 13-year boy was killed and six other people were injured when a vehicle flipped over and plunged into a canal in Upper Egypt's Luxor on Saturday, the Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.

The accident occurred when the vehicle's steering wheel malfunctioned and the vehicle fell into El-Ganabiya Canal in Zeiniya town in the southern Egyptian governorate.

The vehicle was carrying furniture for a local newlywed’s home.

Egypt recorded a 9.3 percent drop in traffic injuries in 2021 compared to 2020, according to a recent report released by the country’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in July 2022.

The number of traffic injuries across Egypt in 2021 was 51,511, down from 2020’s 56,789, the CAPMAS report said.

The report added that 7,101 people died in road accidents, up from the 6,164 deaths recorded a year prior – a 15.2 percent increase.

In 2014, Egypt launched the National Road Project to improve the country’s road network. It has so for developed and widened much of Egypt’s 23-000-kilometre road network and has constructed or upgraded 7,000 kilometres of road.

By 2019, Egypt climbed to 28th place in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report in terms of the quality of its road infrastructure, compared to 118th place in 2014.
