During a press conference on Wednesday on the sidelines of Cairo Water Week, Berger said that the "the European Union has been working with Egypt for 10 years on the issue of water and the development of water enhancement strategies, maintenance and systems."

The EU has provided a grant of 500 million euros and loans of 300 million euros to Egypt for water management projects and also financed reclamation projects for 5,000 hectares of land, he added.

It has also extended grants for small and micro enterprises and has developed a strategy to support water development and conservation in Egypt.

EU-funded and joint Egyptian-EU projects have helped in the creation of thousands of job opportunities in the country, according to Berger.

Water will be a priority item on the agenda of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) that will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh in November, he said.

Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation is the sixth goal of the United Nation's sustainable development goals (SDGs) for the year 2030.
