Egypt to compensate families of those killed in Qalyoub train crash with EGP 100,000: Minister

Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj announced on Tuesday evening that the government will disburse an EGP 100,000 in compensation to each of the families of those killed in the train crash in Qalyoub train station on Tuesday evening.

 

El-Qabbaj added that those who would suffer from permanent disability as a result of the crash will receive EGP 100,000 each in compensation.

The minister noted that all of the injured and their families will receive necessary social services but did not specify a monetary compensation for those who suffered injuries that did not lead to permanent disabilties.

Coordination is underway with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in order to mobilise resources and provide support to the families of the victims, El-Qabbaj added.

Two people were killed and 16 others injured as a train crashed into the platform before derailing at Qalyoub train station in Qalyoubiya governorate in the Nile Delta north of Cairo on Tuesday evening, according to the most recent figures released  by the Ministry of Health and population.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) said that passenger train 557/3027 on the Shubra El-Kheima - Kafr El-Zayat line crashed in the Qalyoub train station at 7:20 pm.

The train failed to heed the semaphore signal and crashed into the buffer stopper at 7:20 pm, which caused the locomotive and the front car to derail, the ENR said.

The injuries took place among passengers who were riding in the cars between the locomotive and the front car, the ENR explained.

Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir ordered the immediate formation of a committee to determine the cause of the crash and identify responsible individuals as well as assess the damage.

Meanwhile, the health ministry said in a statement that injured passngers who are hospitalised at Qalyoub Specialised Hospital are in stable condition.

The prosecution is investigating the incident.
