The convention is an international treaty designed to facilitate international road traffic and to increase road safety by establishing standard traffic rules among the contracting parties.

It also obligates signatory countries to recognize the legality of vehicles from other signatory countries. 

The Vienna Convention on Road Traffic also replaces both the 1926 Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic and the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

In case a state has contracted to more than one convention, the newest one terminates and replaces the previous ones in the relation between the signatory states.

Egypt is already one of the signatories to the 1949 Geneva Convention.

The Convention, which involves road signs and signals, aims to facilitate the movement of traffic on roads and is in line with Egypt's vision to become a logistic trade hub between Arab and African countries.

The government developed and widened many of Egypt’s roads by constructing or upgrading 7,000 kilometres of its 23,000-kilometre network.

In addition, authorities recently installed a large number of cutting-edge speed radars and cameras on highways throughout the country.

In 2019, Egypt was ranked 28th in terms of the quality of road infrastructure in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitive Report, up from the 118th place it occupied in 2014 when the project was first launched.
