The new batch raises the number of delivered locomotives to 800, including 499 dynamic-ventilation and 301 class III air-conditioned locomotives, the minister said in a statement.
The locomotives continue to be delivered according to a predetermined schedule within a deal signed between the Ministry of Transport -- represented by the Egyptian National Railway (ENR) -- and the Hungarian firm Ganz Holding to provide 850 locomotives.
The new delivery also falls within the framework of an agreement to acquire 1,350 passenger locomotives to boost locomotive performance.
Egypt’s railway network -- which, according to ENR, transports 1.4 million passengers per day and 500 million annually -- constitutes one of the world’s oldest, with 9,570 km of tracks running across the country. The network has recently undergone major renovations, including significant upgrading of trains.
