Al-Azhar tunnel, the longest in Cairo with a length of 2.6 kilometres connecting downtown Cairo with Salah Salem road, will have extended operating hours from Saturday through Wednesday during the holy month of Ramadan.
The tunnel will operate from 6:00 am to 2:00 am instead of the usual hours that end at midnight.
It will, however, operate around the clock on Thursdays and Fridays to relieve the expected weekend traffic congestion.
The governor added that the tunnel will undergo cleaning and maintenance on weekdays during closing hours.
According to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), the holy month of Ramadan begins in Egypt on 11 March and lasts 30 days until 9 April.
Last week, the Minister of Local Development, Hesham Amna, announced that all shops and restaurants will be allowed to open till 2 am throughout Ramadan and the three days of Eid Al-Fitr.
