National flag carrier EgyptAir is one of the world's oldest airlines and Africa’s first, starting operations in Cairo on 7 May 1932.

It was originally established as Misr Airwork, a joint venture between the Egyptian government's Banque Misr (85 percent) and the British aviation company Airwork Limited.

Later, it became known as Misrair and underwent subsequent name changes due to mergers and political developments.

EgyptAir was formed in 1971, after splitting from United Arab Airlines due to a merger with Syrian Airlines in 1960.

It operates a fleet of around 80 aircraft serving major destinations worldwide and is a member of the Star Alliance, the world's first global airline alliance, since 2008.

In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023/2024, the airline carried 2.8 million passengers and operated over 10,000 flights, with a commitment to further expansion.

In 2023, 47 million passengers and 365,000 flights passed through Egyptian airports.
