The fare adjustment applies to all public buses, taxis, and microbuses within cities and between governorates.
Media reports said microbus fare increases range from 50 piastres to EGP 1 for most routes and from EGP 1.5 to EGP 1.75 for longer routes.
Moreover, public bus fares increased by EGP 1, while air-conditioned buses increased by EGP 2.
The white taxi tariffs were also raised in all governorates.
In Cairo, the taxi metre will start counting at EGP 9.5 instead of EGP 8.5 for the first kilometre, and each subsequent kilometre will cost EGP 4.5, up from EGP 4.
The first-hour waiting time became EGP 21, with EGP 10.50 for each additional hour.
The reports added that the Cairo municipal authorities mandated displaying banners and stickers at all transportation hubs to inform the public about the new fares.
Furthermore, they designated two hotlines (114 and 15496) to receive complaints on price gauging.
Earlier Thursday, the government raised prices by 10-15 percent on most fuel products, the second hike in 2024.
This came hours after Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly revealed the government's plan to gradually increase the prices of all services, including fuel products, to end subsidies and reach a break-even point by December 2025.
The fuel price increases come ahead of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) third review of its expanded $8 billion loan programme for Egypt, set for 29 July.
