A locomotive travelling from Qena collided with the rear of a passenger train heading to Cairo from Aswan, causing two of the train’s carriages to derail into the Ibrahimiyah Canal, according to the Egyptian National Railways (ENR).

The derailed carriages were separated from the train, allowing it to continue its journey to Cairo, the ENR added.

First responders, including 23 ambulances, emergency equipment and cranes rushed to the site. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, injuries range from bruises, abrasions, and superficial wounds.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered an increase in medical preparedness levels at nearby hospitals, assigning his deputy to monitor the health situation on the ground, the ministry said in a statement.

Egypt’s Prosecutor-General, Mohamed Shawki, ordered an investigation into the accident and the detention of the locomotive driver for a drug test.

Additionally, the Public Prosecution formed a committee to inspect the functionality of the operating and safety equipment.

Meanwhile, Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir ordered the formation of a committee of railway specialists to determine the technical causes of the accident.
