The governorates have announced the new fares and started implementing them with immediate effect.

The fare increase affects all forms of public transport, including buses, taxis, and microbuses, both within cities and between governorates nationwide.

Fares for public buses went up by EGP 1, while air-conditioned buses saw an EGP 2 increase.

Cairo governorate has also announced new fares for the white taxi as the metre will start counting at EGP 10.5 instead of EGP 9.5 for the first kilometre, and each subsequent kilometre will cost EGP 2. The first-hour waiting time became EGP 23, with EGP 11.5 for each additional hour.

Ahram Online contacted private transportation coompany Careem via their social media account and they said they didn't change their fares yet.

Other companies like Uber and DiDi, were not available for comment but they are all expected to announce new prices in the coming days.

Cairo governorate authorities have mandated displaying banners and stickers at all transportation hubs to inform the public about the new fares, designating two hotlines (114 and 15496) to receive complaints on price gauging.

Earlier Friday, the government raised prices on most fuel products, marking the third hike in 2024.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has previously revealed the government's plan to gradually increase the prices of all services, including fuel products, to end subsidies and reach a break-even point by the end of 2025.
