Two children were run over and killed by a train after crossing from “an unauthorized point” at the railway route near Giza on Monday, according to the Egyptian National Railways Authority (ENRA).

The accident occurred at 7:43am (local time) at the Al-Bulayda railway level crossing in the Al-Ayyat district.

The railway authority said the children crossed the tracks despite being closed and unauthorized to cross.

The accident obstructed a train trip on the Sohag-Port Said route.

The ENRA said in its statement that the tragedy led some residents to gather at the crossing, assault the railway guard, and set fire to the guard's cabin.

Consequently, train services in both directions were suspended, the statement added.

The national authority called on citizens to utilize only crossing points designated for the public — the level crossings — and avoid crossing from unauthorized areas to safeguard their lives and protect the authority's properties.
