Egypt’s General Survey Authority (EGSA) has estimated that around EGP 800 million (£13.2 million) will be paid in preliminary compensation for land expropriation tied to the expansion of the Alexandria-Matrouh international coastal road, Al-Mal News reported.

The compensation process is being carried out under existing legal and regulatory frameworks, with contracts currently being arranged with affected landowners. Officials say the process is intended to ensure transparency and compliance with national expropriation laws.

The project will cover an 80 kilometres stretch of road, from kilometre 21 to kilometre 63 within Alexandria Governorate, and from kilometre 63 to kilometre 101 within Matrouh Governorate. The upgrade includes the construction of a dual carriageway with five lanes in each direction: three for main traffic and two for service vehicles.

Authorities have described the project as a key part of Egypt’s national infrastructure strategy, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between governorates.

The road expansion was first designated a public utility project by presidential decree in 2017. The status was reaffirmed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in 2021 to facilitate the legal groundwork, including initial compensation assessments.

Further progress was made in 2024, when Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir issued a decree authorizing land expropriation in Alexandria Governorate. In April 2025, another prime ministerial decree renewed the project's public utility status, allowing it to proceed through the final legal and procedural phases.
