The airport’s official code, recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), will also be changed from HEBA to HEAX, the announcement added.
According to a statement on the Governorate’s official Facebook page on Wednesday, the step comes as part of a strategic plan to modernize Egypt’s airport infrastructure, strengthen Alexandria’s regional identity, and highlight its historical and touristic significance as a major international hub.
Borg El-Arab airport , inaugurated in 2010, is the primary international entry point for Alexandria, the North Coast, and the Nile Delta region.
The airport is located about 40 kilometres east of Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city.
As of 2023, the airport received more than two million passengers on 17,000 flights.
It serves both domestic and international flights to several destinations in the Middle East and Europe and is considered an important gateway to Alexandria and the northern governorates of Egypt, offering advanced services for both passengers and logistics operators.
In addition, it plays a key role in supporting the local economy by facilitating travel and air cargo, while increasing regional air connectivity.
