During a tour of the airport on Saturday, Madbouly described its location near the Pyramids of Giza and the GEM as a “strategic gateway” for tourists and official delegations.

He inspected international and domestic departure and arrival halls, reviewing passport control, customs areas and baggage systems, which he said were vital to ensuring smooth passenger flows.

He also visited the presidential and VIP lounge, saying it meets “the highest standards of comfort and services” and reflects Egypt’s cultural stature.

In a cabinet statement, Madbouly described the airport as one of Egypt’s most modern air hubs and a key link between West Cairo, the Pyramids Plateau, and the GEM.

He said its proximity to Egypt’s most iconic landmarks positions it as a central gateway for the country’s tourism and travel sector.

Officials said that electrical work is nearly complete, with 90 percent of the lighting installation finalised. Landscaping and infrastructure outside the terminal are also being upgraded.

Madbouly urged officials to remain on-site to oversee operations, maintain high service standards and swiftly resolve any issues as traffic through the airport increases.

Located just 12 kilometres from the Pyramids and GEM, Sphinx International Airport opened in 2019 and has since undergone major expansion to relieve pressure on Cairo International Airport and serve Egypt’s flagship cultural projects.

It can now handle 1.2 million passengers a year, with facilities for both domestic and international flights.

Its location west of Cairo provides direct access to major highways, including those to Alexandria, Fayoum, and the North Coast, making it an attractive hub for tourists and business travellers alike.

Officials expect the airport to play a central role in Egypt’s broader plan to attract 30 million tourists annually by 2028, while boosting West Cairo’s growth as a centre for travel, culture and investment.
