Egypt's East Nile monorail unaffected by water pipe break in New Cairo: Tunnels authority

Ahram Online , Tuesday 30 Dec 2025

The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) said Tuesday that the East Nile monorail project in the New Capital was not affected by a water pipe break on South 90th Street in New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement, stressing that the monorail system remains intact and is operating normally.

In a statement, NAT said the incident occurred near the East Nile monorail but had no impact on its infrastructure. It added that final trial operations without passengers are continuing as scheduled.

Earlier in the day, the New Cairo authority said a break occurred in a 1,200-mm force sewer line made of glass-reinforced plastic on South 90th Street, confirming that drinking water services were not affected.

The statement followed reports from residents who said large amounts of water had flooded parts of South 90th Street near the monorail line, raising questions about the cause of the incident.

The authority added that repair work is underway and that technical measures have been put in place to complete the repairs quickly and restore normal conditions as soon as possible.

The East Nile monorail is one of Egypt’s major green public transport projects. It is designed to connect eastern Cairo with the New Capital through fast, uninterrupted elevated travel.

The 56.5-kilometre line runs from Cairo Stadium in Nasr City to the New Capital and includes 22 stations.

The system is being built by a consortium led by Bombardier Transportation, now part of Alstom, in partnership with Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors. It will operate fully automated trains with a capacity of about 560 passengers per train.

According to the Ministry of Transport, passenger services on the East Nile monorail are scheduled to begin in the first week of January 2026.

The line will connect with Metro Line 3 at Stadium Station and with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system at the Arts and Culture Station in the New Capital.
