Egypt reports 738 new Covid-19 cases, 31 fatalities on Wednesday

Egypt reported 738 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, bringing the total infection tally officially to 303,783 since the outbreak began in February 2020, the health ministry said in its daily coronavirus update statement.

The health ministry also reported 31 new deaths, causing the total number of deaths from the virus to reach 17,294.

As many as 809 patients have been discharged during the past 24 hours after recovering from the virus, the ministry said, raising the total number of recoveries to 256,467.

Earlier on Wednesday, Egypt received 4.4 million doses of the Chinese Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine

Egypt also received a shipment of 1 million doses of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine on Tuesday as well as 3,000 litres of the raw material required to produce 4.6 million doses of Sinovac locally, according to the ministry.

More than 15 million doses have been administered in Egypt since the country's vaccination campaign started in January as of 23 September, according to the World Health Organisation.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has ordered all ministers to issue a decree forbidding employees from entering government institutions unless they submit proof of vaccination, or a PCR test every three days for those who refuse to receive the vaccine, according to a document issued by the cabinet on 26 September.
