Egypt records highest daily rise of coronavirus cases since May

Egypt reported 960 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day toll since 31 May 2021, bringing the total infection tally officially to 346,808 since the outbreak began in February 2020, said Health Ministry in its daily coronavirus update statement.


Egypt’s health ministry also recorded 71 new COVID-19 deaths, the biggest single-day rise of coronavirus deaths since 14 July 2020 when 73 fatalities were reported.

The country’s total number of deaths from the virus has reached 19,435, according to the health ministry statement.

The statement added that 654 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries 289,533.

Earlier Wednesday, acting health minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar stated that Egypt has so far partially vaccinated 27.4 million citizens against the coronavirus and fully inoculated 14.4 million others.

Egypt started its vaccination campaign in January this year and is aiming to immunise 40 per cent of its 102-million population by the end of 2021.
