Egypt receives over 3 million doses of coronavirus vaccines

Egypt received on Wednesday evening a shipment of 3.68 million doses of coronavirus vaccine shots via the COVAX initiative, the Egyptian health ministry announced.

The shipment contained 2.38 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine obtained via COVAX in cooperation with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and 1.3 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine from the US via COVAX, according to acting Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar.

The US has provided Egypt over the past few weeks with shipments of Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines.

Egypt has secured a total of 80.5 million doses of all WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccines and has so far administrated 44.2 million shots, according to Abdel-Ghaffar.

On Wednesday, the government approved administering a third booster shot for the most vulnerable groups in the country.

Egypt has so far recorded a total of 352,123 coronavirus infections, including 20,052 deaths and 292,655 recoveries.
