Egypt’s Ministry of Health will start sending text notifications to fully vaccinated individuals from a selected target group to receive booster shots within a few days, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, the Ministry of Health and Population’s spokesman, announced in a televised statement on Sunday evening.

The messages will include time slots to set up a vaccination appointment, with the spokesman confirming that there is no need to register on the ministry’s website to receive the booster shot.

The country approved the administration of a booster shot for an initial group comprising those whose health and work conditions put them at elevated risk of contracting the virus, provided that they received the primary shots at least six months ago.

The group includes patients who suffer from immunodeficiency, patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, the elderly, and healthcare workers, the government announced in late November.

Nearly 4,150,000 Egyptians are eligible to receive the supplementary dose, according to Cabinet Spokesperson Nader Saad.

Egypt has administered 45.9 million vaccine doses so far, with 30 million citizens inoculated with an initial dose and 15.9 million fully vaccinated, according to the ministry’s count.

The country seeks to accelerate vaccination nationwide to reach its target of immunising 40 million citizens by the end of the year.

Egypt has registered a total of 363,162 coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic, including 342,435 recoveries and 20,727 deaths. No cases linked to the Omicron variant have been detected in the country so far, according to Abdel-Ghaffar.

Furthermore, the spokesman highlighted the government’s plan to combat the new contagious Omicron variant, saying the authorities raised the level of awareness at all its ports and is implementing all precautionary measures.
