Egypt reported 2,272 new coronavirus infections on Monday, bringing the total infection toll up to 441,923 since the outbreak began in February 2020, the Ministry of Health and Population said in its daily report.

The ministry also reported 57 new deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities nationwide to 22,993.

The statement added that the total number of recoveries is 374,479.

Egypt has administered a total of 38 million first vaccine doses and 27 million second doses since the start of the mass vaccination campaign in January, according to the report.

As many as 657,257 booster shots have also been administered, bringing the total number of doses given since the start of the campaign to 66 million.

The recent spike in infections comes amid Egypt’s continued efforts to expand its vaccination campaign and immunise 70 percent of the population by the second half of 2022.

Egypt is expected to witness a decline in infections in two to three weeks, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, the health ministry’s spokesperson, said in remarks to the media on Wednesday.
