Egypt's daily coronavirus infections drop below 2,000-mark for 1st time since January

Egypt's daily coronavirus infections dropped below the 2,000 mark for first time since late January, with 1,989 cases reported on Tuesday, according to the country's Ministry of Health and Population.

This brings the total number of cases detected nationwide since the outbreak began in February 2020 to 473,449, added the statement.

The ministry also recorded 51 coronavirus-related fatalities over the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally of deaths to 23,857.

The daily report added that the total number of recoveries increased to 403,967 after 1,846 patients were discharged from hospitals nationwide in the past 24 hours.

Driven by the pandemic's fifth wave, the country witnessed a considerable rise in infections during the past month, with the daily infection toll topping 2,000 cases for the first time ever on 29 January. The number of infections and deaths has however stabilised in the previous two weeks.

More than 29 million citizens are fully vaccinated to date whereas more than 39 million citizens have received their first dose, the health ministry has announced.

985,931 citizens have received their third booster shooter.

The country plans to vaccinate 70 percent of its eligible population, those who are older than 12 years old, by the second half of 2022.
