The ministry also recorded 48 coronavirus-related fatalities, bringing the total tally of deaths to 24,040.

The daily report added that the total number of recoveries increased to 412,161 after 1,521 patients were discharged from hospitals nationwide in the past 24 hours.

The country, which is battling a fifth wave of the pandemic, has witnessed a decline in the number of infections over the past several days.

In the last two months, infections spiked and exceeded the 2,000-case mark.

However, on Wednesday, Egypt’s daily coronavirus infections dropped below the 2,000 mark for the first time since late January.

More than 30 million citizens are fully vaccinated to date and more than 40 million citizens have received their first dose, according to recent ministry figures.

Moreover, over a million citizens have already received their booster shot.

The country plans to vaccinate 70 percent of its eligible population —12-year-olds and above — by the second half of 2022.
