WHO chief to attend 69th session of Regional Committee for East Mediterranean in Egypt

Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in Egypt on Sunday to attend the 69th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean (RC69) taking place 10-13 October in Cairo.

Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar received Ghebreyesus at Cairo International Airport for an official visit that will last for several days to attend the annual meeting, a statement by the ministry read.

The RC69, the first in-person meeting of the regional committee since the pandemic started, is being held under the slogan “together for a healthier and sustainable tomorrow.”

Those who cannot attend in person can Zoom in virtually.

Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean, will attend the event alongside a number of health ministers from Eastern Mediterranean countries, representatives of the regional and national health organisations, and a host of diplomats and academics.

The event seeks to discuss means of achieving sustainable development goals post-COVID-19, Al-Mandhari said.

The agenda includes discussions on vaccine production in the region and strategies to eliminate cervical cancer in the region.

It also includes discussions on improving the monitoring of response in public health events and emergencies in member states, strengthening hospital information systems, and controlling tobacco and nicotine products.
