1 killed, 83 injured in chlorine gas leak at sewage station in Egypt’s Qena

A chlorine gas leak at a sewage treatment plant in Qena governorate in Upper Egypt has killed one woman, and injured 83 other people.

All of the injured were given first aid at the scene and have since been transferred to hospitals to be placed on respiratory support. All the cases are reported as stable.

Qena Governor Major General Ashraf El-Dawoudy and other authorities inspected the scene of the incident, which took place in Workers City in central Qena.

The governor explained that gas leaked from one of the cylinders located at the mechanical workshop of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Company, just before it was to be refilled.

The maintenance team from the water company managed to contain the leak and moved the cylinder away from the city.

The governor stressed that comprehensive care would be provided for the victims until they are fully recovered.

He also announced that the Ministry of Social Solidarity would compensate those victims who had spent more than 24 hours in the hospital.
