In Photos: Egypt, Germany, Britain, Greece mark 80th anniversary of Battle of El-Alamein

High-level delegates from Egypt, Germany, Britain, and Greece participated on Saturday in an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of El-Alamein, which marked the beginning of the end for the Axis in North Africa during WWII.

According to the German Embassy in Cairo, Secretary of State for the German Minister of Defense Thomas Hitschler, UK Defense Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa Air Marshal Martin Elliot Sampson, Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff Gen. Konstantinos Floros, and Deputy Chief of the Italian Defense General Staff Lt. Gen. Carmine Masiello, took part in this year's ceremony.

The event is intended to serve as a reminder of the horrors of WWII, and reiterate the call for preserving peace and safety.

The battle of El-Alamein, which began on October 23, 1942, was a major turning point in the war, halting the advance of the Axis in North Africa before the final victory a year later.
