The frigate, named Al-Qahhar by the Egyptian Navy, was built by German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) at SBN Shipyard, read a statement by the Egyptian Armed Forces on Monday.
Commander of the Egyptian Navy Ashraf Atwa raised the Egyptian flag on the new frigate in a ceremony held in the German port city of Bremerhaven to celebrate the handover of the frigate to Egypt.
In a speech at the ceremony where he delivered the greetings of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Atwa expressed his appreciation for the productive collaboration between the Egyptian and German navies.
He added that this collaboration is in line with the ongoing development plan of the Egyptian naval fleet that aims to strengthen security and stability in naval operational areas and economic waters as well as to address the challenges and risks in the region.
Egypt received the first MEKO A-200 frigate in October 2022.
The MEKO A-200 frigate is 121 metres in length and has a range of 6,800 nautical miles. It has a displacement of 3,931 tons and can reach a maximum speed of 28 knots.
Egypt had previously acquired four submarines, also manufactured by TKMS.
