Egypt warned against jeopardizing the security and safety of Egyptian security personnel deployed on the country’s borders, a high-level Egyptian source told Al-Qahera News TV Channel on Monday.

The warnings came in the wake of the killing of an Egyptian soldier after a shooting on the border near Rafah earlier on Monday.

According to Al-Qahera News, initial investigations indicated that there was an exchange of fire between the Israeli army and Palestinian resistance.

The source said that the exchange of fire prompted the Egyptian security forces to take protective measures and respond to the source of the shooting.

He affirmed that those responsible would be identified and necessary measures would be taken to prevent it from happening again.

Egyptian Armed Forces Spokesman Gharib Abdel-Hafez stated earlier that the Armed Forces are investigating the shooting.

The official emphasized to Al-Qahera that the international community must assume its responsibilities concerning the serious escalation at the Egyptian borders with Gaza and the Philadelphi Corridor, not only for security reasons but also to ensure the continued flow of humanitarian aid into the strip.

He highlighted Egypt's warning against the repercussions of Israeli military operations in the Philadelphi Corridor.

Egypt has issued these warnings for months, the source noted, adding that the Israeli attack on the Philadelphi Corridor creates conditions that are difficult to control and likely to escalate.

Egypt is aware of the plans of those who promote sedition, incitement and agitation, and we prioritize our national responsibilities above everything else, he stressed.

The 14-kilometre-long and 100-metre-wide Philadelphi corridor is a buffer zone on the Egypt-Gaza border extending from the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the Karm Abu Salem border crossing in the south. It is guaranteed by the 1979 Egypt–Israel peace treaty.

Egyptian security forces have patrolled the corridor after Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005.
