In a statement issued with directives to Egyptian hotels, especially in South Sinai and the Red Sea governorate, the hotel association said that the Tourism and Antiquities Fund will pay $10 a night for Ukrainian tourists to stay at three-star hotel.
For those staying at five-star and four-star hotels, the association said hotels should give Ukrainian tourists a choice of either moving to a three-star hotel or remain at their current accomodation at a special rate.
Last week, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said that all Ukrainian and Russian tourists were welcome to extend their stay at Egyptian hotels.
The embassy added that it contacted last week the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to assist in organising the return of Ukrainian tourists to Ukraine’s neighbouring countries.
Following the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian government closed its airspace to civilian flights.
According to statements by the Ukrainian embassy in Cairo on Sunday, more than 16,000 Ukrainian tourists in Egypt’s Red Sea resort cities are unable to return to Ukraine due to the Russian invasion of their country.
The embassy of Ukraine has shared the statements issued by the Egyptian Hotel Association on its official Facebook page and instructed stranded Ukrainian nationals to cite these statements to hotel staff if necessary.
Egypt is among the top destinations for Ukrainian tourists, with about 1.5 million visiting Egypt in 2019.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, almost 727,100 Ukrainian tourists visited Egypt in 2020.
