Cairo named 2026 Capital of Tourism for OIC Member States

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has officially announced Cairo the Capital of Tourism for its member states in 2026.

The announcement was made during the 12th session of the Conference of Tourism Ministers of OIC member states, currently being held in Uzbekistan. 

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Ahmed Issa celebrated Cairo's designation, emphasizing the city’s rich and diverse tourism attractions.

He highlighted the ministry's efforts in developing the Cairo City Break cultural tourism initiative, which aims to enhance Cairo as a standalone tourist destination and increasing overnight stays.

Adel El-Gendy, Director General of the General Department of Strategic Management, explained that the nomination file showcased Cairo's extensive efforts in developing its cultural and historical tourism products.

The file detailed Cairo’s significant historical and archaeological sites, such as the Giza Pyramids, Saqqara, and Old Cairo's rich heritage.

 

Key aspects highlighted in Cairo's nomination included several paths, including historical path featuring archaeological landmarks such as the Giza Pyramids, Saqqara, and Dahshur, and spiritual path including Islamic heritage sites and the Holy Family’s journe.

It also involved cultural path highlighting Al-Muizz Street, museums, and historic palaces; humanitarian path showcasing sites for religious and national celebrations, and entertainment path including Al-Azhar Park and the Ahl Misr Walkway.

In addition, it included lifestyle path featuring shopping areas, traditional foods, and arts and the Nile Path highlighting the Nile walkway with its entertainment venues.

The file also included modern attractions in the New Administrative Capital, demonstrating its potential as a leading urban tourism destination.

This recognition underscores Cairo's status as a global tourist hub, promising to attract more visitors and enhance its international profile.
