The plan includes assessing existing buoy locations, evaluating their use, and determining appropriate installation methods, according to a statement by the environment ministry.

Minister Fouad stated that buoys protect coral reefs and reduce the impact of random boat docking, ensuring marine sustainability and supporting sustainable tourism in South Sinai.

Accordingly, the project will begin with the first phase and continue in several stages, with necessary equipment and permits provided in collaboration with relevant authorities.

According to the minister, the project aims to reduce the negative impacts on coral reefs in South Sinai by supporting the maintenance and installation of buoys, thereby preserving environmental wealth and protecting the coral reefs.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) and the Chamber of Diving and Water Sports (CDWS), according to the statement.

As of September 2024, there were 1,200 buoys in the Red Sea aimed at safeguarding the coral reefs and marine life, according to Ahmed Ghallab, director of Marine Reserves and the Northern Islands in the Red Sea Governorate.

In June 2024, a safari boat struck a coral reef near Marsa Alam, causing significant damage and raising concerns about protecting these fragile ecosystems.

In May 2013, a foreign vessel, the "Sea Lord," caused significant damage to coral reefs in South Sinai's Blue Hole and Canyon diving areas by dropping its anchor on the reef bed.

Ras Mohammed Protected Area

The area is located on the Sinai Peninsula at the meeting point of the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. Its territory extends into the Red Sea for about 10 to 15 kilometres.

It is considered one of the most beautiful diving spots in the world, with diverse wildlife. The area is also home to various marine animals and boasts diverse hard and soft coral reefs.

Within it is Ras Mohammed National Park, located at the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula. This park has captivated the global diving community for decades.

The park, home to world-class dive sites, was established in 1983 as Egypt's first National Park. In 2018, it was added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List, recognizing its effective management and governance.
