This significant growth is due to government efforts, including the development of tourism infrastructure and airports nationwide.
It also results from improving hotel service quality and launching innovative promotional campaigns to attract more promising markets to Egypt.
The government has also enhanced tourism diversity to include cultural, beach, and medical tourism, thereby supporting the increase of tourist nights and the average spending per visitor.
Tourism revenues, recorded under travel receipts in Egypt’s balance of payments, are calculated based on the number of tourist nights and the average daily expenditure per visitor, as estimated by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Tourism is one of Egypt’s key sources of foreign currency.
In July 2024, the cabinet launched an EGP 50 billion initiative to support the tourism sector by building and operating new hotel rooms.
The government has also launched a national strategy to develop the sector and attract 30 million visitors by 2028.
In 2024, Egypt received 15.7 million tourists, generating $14.1 billion in revenue—exceeding the previous record of 14.9 million tourists set in 2023.
