The Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday the release of a new collection of non-circulating gold and silver commemorative coins to mark the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), one of Egypt’s most significant cultural landmarks and the world’s largest museum dedicated to ancient Egyptian civilization.

Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk said the new coins, produced by the General Egyptian Treasury and Mint Authority, document the GEM’s architectural and archaeological features, reflecting Egypt’s efforts to present a modern cultural icon to the world.

According to Dr Sherif Hazem, advisor to the finance minister for engineering affairs, the series includes six denominations: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 pounds. Each bears a unique design inspired by iconic elements of the museum, such as the Hanging Obelisk, the main façade and entrance, the Solar Boats, the statue of Ramses II, and the golden mask of Tutankhamun.

He said each coin will be issued with a certificate providing historical background and technical details, prepared in coordination with GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim.

Gamal Hussein, head of the Egyptian Treasury and Mint Authority, said the coins were fully designed and manufactured by the authority’s team of designers, engineers, and technicians in line with international quality standards.

He added that the release date and points of sale will be announced to coincide with the museum’s official opening.

The collection continues the ministry’s tradition of commemorating Egypt’s major national projects, including the New Suez Canal, the New Administrative Capital, and the Decent Life initiative, he concluded.
