Egypt's president-elect, Mohamed Morsi, has attended Friday prayers at Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque before heading to Tahrir Square to deliver a major speech to the nation later in the afternoon.

Al-Azhar is the most prestigous religious institution in the Islamic world and Egypt's official Islamic institution.

Mohamed Abdel-Fadil, the minister of religious endowments, has delivered the sermon focusing on the issue of religious tolerance between Muslims and non-Muslims in Islamic history as well as the need for equality between all Egyptians regardless of creed.

"I wish the Egyptian president well. I say this must be a nation based on justice, democracy and equality for all," Abdel-Fadil said.
