President Mohamed Morsi will attend the funeral of the soldiers killed in Sinai on Sunday, said presidential spokesman Yaser Ali on Monday.
Morsi, who earlier Monday visited Rafah, the border post between Egypt and the Gaza Strip where the attack on Egyptian border guards took place, will attend the military funeral in Cairo to honour the victims of the attacks.
Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, head of Egypt's Supreme Council for Armed Forces; Sami Anan, Chief of Staff, and other leaders of the Armed Forces will also attend the funeral.
The presidential spokesman also pointed out that the funeral is expected to be open to the public.
Morsi also issued on Monday a three-day period of national mourning for those killed during Sunday's attack on Egyptian border guards in Sinai, confirmed presidential spokesman Yasser Ali on Monday.
In a press statement, Ali added that the president has vowed to honour the 16 "martyrs" and seven injured soldiers as well as promising to award the victims' families financial compensation.
According to media reports, the border assault on Sunday involved a military vehicle, reportedly hijacked earlier, which exploded around 7pm. Others were injured after the attackers opened fire on them. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
