Khaled Kandil, a senator and the deputy head of the Wafd Party, strongly condemned on Saturday the European Parliament's statement on Egypt’s upcoming presidential elections.

According to Kandil, the European Parliament's statement reflects inaccurate information and demonstrates "a misguided understanding of the developments and events in Egypt."

He emphasized the sovereignty of Egypt, calling upon the European Parliament to consider the progress achieved in Egypt and to support Egyptian stability and prosperity.

Kandil noted that the statement has exceeded "the bounds of legality, international norms, and international agreements." He also urged the European Parliament to "enhance cooperation between both sides instead of taking escalatory measures that negatively impact the bilateral relations."

On Wednesday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for Egypt to hold “credible, free and fair” presidential elections and to “stop stifling opposition voices” ahead of the elections.

The resolution criticizes Egypt’s handling of political prisoners, upcoming elections, media regulations, and treatment of the opposition.

Egypt's House of Representatives has already refuted the claims made in this resolution.

Voting in Egypt will take place 10-12 December, with Egyptians abroad casting their votes 1-3 December.
