Pope Tawadros II, the patriarch of the See of St Mark and leader of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church, performed the Divine Liturgy at the Virgin Mary and St Takla Haymanot Church in Greater Cairo’s Qalioubiya governorate after inaugurating the church on Monday.
Six priests participated in the inauguration of the church located in the seventh district of Obour City, a statement by the Coptic Orthodox Church’s spokesperson read.
Pope Tawadros II arrived at the church at 7am and unveiled the memorial plaque dating the church’s inauguration.
The pope also inaugurated the main altar named after Virgin Mary, an altar named after Martyr Menas and Pope Kyrillos VI, and an altar named after St Takla Haymanot.
In a homily during the inauguration, Pope Tawadros congratulated the attendees on the Nayrouz feast, saying it holds a special place “among world churches and we celebrate it as an extension of the ancient Pharaonic civilisation.”
