Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawki Allam praised on Tuesday the launch of the National Strategy for Human Rights, saying it will contribute to fighting terrorism and extremism.

The strategy does not only address the political right and expression of opinion, but also extends to all the economic and social aspects, and this is important in addressing the imbalance in human rights, Allam told a conference held by the Egyptian National Press Authority (NPA) on Tuesday.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi launched the strategy during a ceremony in the New Administrative Capital on Saturday.

Allam said Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta, the body responsible for issuing religious edicts, established in 2014 an Observatory for Monitoring Takfiri Fatwas and Extremist Ideologies.

Up to 600 reports were issued about fatwas that were issued without correct scientific basis, Allam added.

Abdel-Sadek El-Shorbagy, the chairman of the NPA, said Egypt and the Arab region are facing a "great" challenge represented in the forces that aim to spread their destructive ideas, cast doubt on the achievements that extended to all the country's sectors, and distort the country's institutions.

Since President El-Sisi, El-Shorbagy said, assumed the responsibility, the Egyptian state drew up a comprehensive development plan for sectors and institutions in the country.
