Cairo governor Khaled Abdel-Aal issued the decision on Wednesday to mark the 48th anniversary of Egypt’s victory in the war against Israel in 1973.
The war paved the way for the return of the occupied Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in 1982 and the withdrawal of the last Israeli soldier from South Sinai’s city of Taba in 1988.
Public and private sector employees have taken Thursday 7 October as a paid holiday.
Days earlier, the government enforced winter working hours concerning commercial venues, coffee shops and restaurants starting 1 October as part of preventive measures to curb the spread of the pandemic.
The winter working hours of commercial shops and shopping malls are set from 7am to 10pm on weekdays and until 11pm during weekends, on Thursdays and Fridays. Coffee shops, restaurants and bazaars can operate from 5am to midnight on weekdays and till 1am during weekends.
Pharmacies, bakeries, supermarkets, and fruit shops are allowed to open around the clock.
