Rain storms across the country have reached their peak on Saturday's mid-night with milder weather forecast for Sunday, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) said.

Ponds of rainwater in parts of Cairo and Giza governorates throughout the day on Saturday caused numerous traffic congestions.

Authorities in various governorates deployed water vacuum trucks on major roads and squares to suck rainwater and restore smooth traffic.

Moderate rain accompanied by thunder is expected Sunday on parts of the northern coasts and northern Lower Egypt, including the governorates of Matrouh, Alexandria, Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Damietta, Port Said, and Arish.

Matrouh and Alexandria were soaked by heavy rains accompanied by drop in temperature.

Several governorates, including Cairo and Giza, suspended schools on Saturday and Sunday.

Mild to moderate rainfall is expected in southern Lower Egypt, the Gulf of Suez area, and Sinai. This includes the governorates of Dakahlia, Gharbia, Sharkia, Menoufia, as well as Sinai’s Ras Ghareb and Saint Catherine cities.

Parts of the Greater Cairo area, Suez Canal cities, and northern Upper Egypt will expectedly be dampened with mild rain on Sunday.

On Monday, mild to moderate rainfall is expected in northern coasts and northern Delta.

The meteorological authority also expects drop in temperature on Sunday in northern Egypt, the Greater Cairo area and northern Upper Egypt.

The Greater Cairo area and Lower Egypt will see nice weather during the daytimes from Sunday to Friday, with highs ranging from 20-24 degrees Celsius and lows of 15 degrees.

The country's north coast is expected to also see nice weather, with highs of 20-24 degrees and lows of 16 degrees.

South Sinai is set to see mild weather during daytimes with highs ranging from 28-28 degrees and ranging of 18 degrees.

Northern Upper Egypt will see highs of 22-27 during the same days and lows of 14 degrees. Southern Upper Egypt will see warmer weather with highs of 25-30 and lows of 16 degrees.

Egypt has no separate rainwater drainage network and relies on the sewage network to drain rainwater.

Establishing a separate rainwater network is estimated to cost the state hundreds of billions of Egyptian pounds, according to experts.

The government has embarked in recent years on several national projects to modernise roads and the sewage system.
