5.9-magnitude quake hits Crete island, sensed in Egypt

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the island of Crete earlier Wednesday, said chairman of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) Gad El-Qadi, adding that the jolt was felt in Egypt.

The tremor occurred at 7:15 a.m. Cairo local time, he said in a statement.

NRIAG received no reports of casualties or damage, he added.

Egypt is typically an earthquake safe country that rarely sees earthquakes, with the latest major earthquake, measuring 5.6 in magnitude, killing 541 people and injuring over 6,500 in 1992.
