Coinciding with seasonal winter weather, many parts of Egypt, including the coastal city of Hurghada, have been subject to heavy rain, thunderstorms and a significant drop in temperature since Thursday.
Several areas of Greater Cairo, Sinai, the Red Sea, Minya, Assiut, and other governorates were covered by dense clouds and hit by moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday, reported the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA).
School in Alexandria, Beheira, Gharbiya, Kafr El-Sheikh and Dahaqliya governorates was called off on Saturday to guarantee the safety of students over the bout of bad weather that is expected to continue till Monday, according to the EMA.
The EMA forecast on Wednesday a five-day cold spell accompanied by moderate to heavy rain and wind in Cairo, the Nile Delta and north Upper Egypt.
In a statement on Saturday, the EMA advised citizens to avoid standing under trees and billboards, avoid touching street lights, and to drive carefully and at slow speed when it rains. It also urged citizens to stay away from glass windows and metal doors during thunderstorms.
Three people were killed and 13 others were injured on Friday across the country due to bad weather conditions, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
One man was killed in the Nile Delta's Kafr El-Sheikh governorate after he was electrocuted by an electric pole. A microbus in Upper Egypt's Minya overturned, killing one of the passengers. A third person was killed in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria when an old two-story house collapsed.
Egypt's weather is expected to improve starting starting Tuesday, according to the EMA.
