The Ministry of Interior says there were no fatalities in the fire, which broke out at Alexandria’s City Centre Mall and was extinguished by firefighters.
One of the two people who were injured had broken his leg while attempting to escape the fire, and the other was a firefighter who suffered from smoke inhalation, according to Governor of Alexandria Mohamed El-Sherif.
About six fire engines and 12 ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the fire.
Minister of Health Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, who was already in Alexandria at the time, visited the site of the fire.
The fire erupted from a central air conditioner on the roof of the mall, and it spread to a canopy over the mall’s gate, according to the interior ministry.
City Centre Mall, which is on the Alexandria Cairo Desert Road, opened in 2003 and is one of Alexandria’s biggest malls, with over 170 retail shops and restaurants over 60,370 square metres.
The mall is owned and operated by the Emirati Majid Al-Futtaim Holding Group.
