In 2010, Ghoneim, a computer engineer who worked for Google ME and North Africa at the time, set up a Facebook page that mobilised many for the 25 January, 2011 Revolution.
Ghoneim, 41, has lived in the United States since 2014.
In 2019, Ghoneim posted several highly controversial videos on social media that were critical of both government policies as well as the practices of some of the youths who participated in the 2011 movement.
