Renowned Egyptian psychiatry professor Yahya El-Rakhawy dies aged 89

The renowned and pioneering Egyptian psychiatry professor Yahya El-Rakhawy passed away on Sunday at the age of 89, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate (EMS) announced in a statement.

El-Rakhaway, one of the most famous psychologists in Egypt in last decades, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University in 1957 and earned a PhD degree in psychiatry in 1963.

El-Rakhaway was a professor of Psychiatry at Cairo University and the co-founder of group psychotherapy in Egypt. He is also founder of the first milieu therapy hospital in the Arab region (Dar El-Mokattam for Mental Health) in 1973.

He published more than 50 books, and thousands of articles in different Egyptian and Arab journals. In 1979, he received the State Incentive Award in literature and in 2016, he received the title of the Dean of the Arab Psychiatry.

El-Rakhaway was honoured by the EMS during its celebration of Egyptian Doctor Day on 18 March.
