The move aims to preserve public safety and allow authorities to deal with the effects of the bad weather, the statement added.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected across Lower Egypt on Thursday and Friday, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority forecast, with the start of winter.

The EMA also predicted a drop of 2-3 degrees in temperatures nationwide, with Alexandria to see highs 19-20 degrees of and lows 12-14 degrees in the coming two days.

The decision only applies to students and teachers, according to the statement.

The governor also ordered an exceptional paid day-off on Thursday for female employees who are tending to children under 12 years of age and employees with disabilities.

Senior employees occupying leading posts and shift workers in Alexandria schools are exempted from the decision, the statement added.
