Sunday a paid day off for Egypt's public sector for Coptic Christmas

Sunday 8 January will be a paid day off for public sector workers on the occasion of Coptic Orthodox Christmas, which falls on 7 January, according to a decree issued by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

Coptic Christmas, which was designated a national holiday in 2002, will be a paid day off for employees at ministries, government institutions, public sector companies, and local administrations,

Coptic Orthodox Egyptians, who make up 90 percent of the country’s Christian population, celebrate Christmas on 7 January according to the Julian Calendar.

Smaller Egyptian Christian denominations – such as Catholics and Evangelicals – celebrate Christmas on 25 December, according to the Gregorian Calendar.
