Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced that it recorded a magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Hurghada city on the Red Sea coast in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to the NRIAG, the earthquake took place at 1:41am.

The quake took place offshore, about 40 kilometres northeast of the city at a depth of eight kilometres.

While the quake could be felt in nearby areas, no injury or property damage was reported.

Shallow earthquakes – up to 70 kilometres deep – tend to be felt more strongly as they occur closer to the surface.
